Bratislava Hosted the International OSCE Conference on Cyber Security

For two days, on 17 and 18 June 2019, Bratislava became the venue for the OSCE International Conference on Cyber Security. It was the fourth event of a series of conferences that will take place in Slovakia this year under the Presidency of the Slovak Republic in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The conference was opened with speeches by Richard Raši, Deputy Prime Minister, and Thomas Greminger, OSCE Secretary-General. “I believe this Conference will be a catalyst for closer multilateral cooperation not only in implementing CBMs in cyber/ICT technologies, but also in addressing emerging challenges in this area,” said R. Raši. The main topics of the Bratislava event were artificial intelligence and inclusion as a driving force of regional cyber security. Mr Greminger pointed out that “cyber CBMs in the OSCE can help restore confidence, which is a prerequisite for reducing tensions and preventing conflicts.” The common message of the speakers was that the partnership between the government and the private sectors is crucial in defending cyber attacks.

Expert discussions in the thematic panels were complemented by seven side-events organized by the OSCE participating countries (Slovakia, Romania, France), as well as the world’s leading non-governmental organizations dealing with the current cyber security issues, and the Microsoft company. The Slovak side-event called “Breaking cyber barriers: Inclusion as a driver of regional cyber security” focused on the current issues of youth involvement and aspects of gender equality in the area of cyber security.

The conference provided a unique opportunity for the government experts from the OSCE participating states to discuss cyber/ICT security at the global, regional and national levels. In the margins of the event, the first consultations on cyber security of the newly formed UN Sixth Group of Governmental Experts (UNGGE) were held with representatives of the OSCE participating States.
