High-speed internet connection in every Slovak municipality by 2020

Until 2020, each municipality in Slovakia should be covered by fast internet connection. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for Investments and Informatization (ODMII) is working together with operators on this coverage. On the verge of the digital transformation, the high-speed internet connection is a necessary part of life of every inhabitant in our country.

The ODPMII has signed memoranda with operators and association of local internet providers, based on which they should cover our territory with high-speed internet connection. It started monitoring their commitments in April. The monitoring showed that white spots in our territory will completely disappear until 2020. It is also one of the objectives of the European Union to provide all its inhabitants with access to the internet with the speed of minimum 30 Mbit/s.

Operators submitted current data to the ODPMII about their performance and adherence to the schedule specified in memoranda. In Slovakia, there are currently several dozens of municipalities with less than 50 per cent of their area covered with the internet connection of 30 Mbit/s, and operators intends to cover them until the end of 2020. As of today, there is only one small village in Rožňava District that none of the operators intends to cover due to economic reasons.

“Even though the data is more than satisfactory, it is our ambition to have fast broadband internet connection available to each household”, Deputy Prime Minister R. Raši explained. Therefore, the ODPMII is preparing the National Broadband Internet Plan. Its assumption is to prepare a more detailed mapping of Slovakia at each address with the access to connection of at least 100 Mbit/s, with the possibility of increasing it to 1 Gbit/s. Results of the mapping should guarantee that each household will have access to super-fast internet connection in the following years.

The reason for mapping each address in Slovakia is the future 2021-2027 Programming Period for EU funds, in which we want to spend money for broadband internet connection. In order to use the European funds, we must meet one basic precondition, i.e. existence of the national broadband connection plan. Its development is subject to the coverage mapping.

The ODPMII has already mapped the internet coverage in the past, when it focused on the NGA networks coverage in municipalities in order to detect availability of the basic broadband connection with the speed of 30 Mbit/s. The mapping was based on goals of the Digital Agenda Until 2020. The current mapping is based on strategic goals of the European Union for connectivity until 2025.
